Sample Science Project and Grading Rubric
Sixth grade students engaged in a Project Based Learning activity to successful create a parachute egg drop or balloon powered car. The students had to apply their knowledge on Sir Isaac Newton's Three Laws of Motion to create their project. They had a journal to document the process and observations while constructing and testing their project. In addition, the students used an iMovie to video record the testing. They were required to use academic language to explain what worked and what didn't and to explaining their reasoning. Lastly, students had to independently write an informational essay on their project to answer the essential questions we focused on for the unit. This project was used for Camarena's semiannual event called The Gallery of Experts. On the day of the event, parents attend as the students present the project they became experts on.

First Grade
First grade students learned about sound waves and how vibrating materials can make sound. They used plastic cups, string, and paper clips to create a telephone to communicate with their partner. They investigated how sound changes as they move their hands in different positions on the cup or string. At the end of the unit, the students formed expert groups and deepened their understanding of how sound travels and how we hear. They created a display using pictures, words, and labels, and presented their findings to the class.
